It took me ages to write this piece because I found it quite difficult to articulate my thoughts. Glad to hear you agree with my assessment of the book and have been talking about it as well. I thought I was alone in finding it problematic.
I think you’ve nailed the nuance that everyone is missing. And that you articulated it perfectly! It’s tricky to say all that without just sounding like you’re in some ‘natural birth brigade’.
I have loved reading your commentary on this book. I coincidentally ordered it yesterday as I have been recommended to read it. I can totally imagine coming to similar conclusions to you. Thank you for the time you took to articulate this so well x
I haven't read this book yet. How disappointing that she falls into the same trope that so many others flail around in. And such a betrayal of feminism to sell the lie that birth is a suffering and punishment that we need to be rescued from by kind men in white coats.
I haven't read this book yet Amity, I don't know whether I can face it after reading your review. Interestingly it was reviewed by a midwife and published in this month's issues of TPM, and Jones' birth reflections weren't mentioned. Are you considering writing a review on Amazon?
Yes! I stopped reading this book during the birth chapter because I really felt I was reading someone’s angry and possibly not fully processed response to their own birth experience and not the wonderful nuanced writing I had enjoyed in Losing Eden.
Yessssssssssss. Basically this. The exact argument I’ve been having amongst circles of friends since I read it. You’ve nailed it.

You've articulated your response so well Amity. I have to admit I simply stopped reading.
