Hi Amity, I always really enjoy your writing. My brother uses AI incessantly and has taken to calling him Pedro (I think due to Pedro Pascale being such a nice bloke?) and I love what someone said above about AI being our collective wisdom because honestly that 'guy' is so insightful, you can see why people can get so caught up in it. But mainly, over here we just really love the authenticity and person-hood of writing like yours. I hear you on the wilderness and the wandering but one word in front of the next, we keep going. Thank you for your words!
Dear Amity, Your feelings resonate with mine. I’m in a career fug now too and self confidence is at an all time low. Your words are so uplifting and help me feel less alone. I would love to have a chat with you. Take care of yourself and please keep writing!! Love Charlie xxx
So enjoyed that Amity! I, too, have learned the only path to contentment is to focus on the here and now. Anything else is a hiding to nothing but anxiety and is a waste of precious energy. We can find all manner of interesting and surprising things to be grateful for. Your conversation with AI being one of them, because whilst not human, it is the product of our collective wisdom, and like you it's given me hope our species actually can muddle its way out of the shitstorm we've created.
Wow! Thanks for sharing this Amity! I feel seen and validated too - for a while I've followed your words - as an ex midwife whom it didn't work out for either and very non linear career pathway, and being ND and had at least one or two breakdowns its so 'good' to read your words! I increasingly think all midlife perimenopausal folk need to have a mandated, paid time off to process life so far and think about next chapters period...
Hello fellow burnout midwife! I. I’ve had messages from other women too saying they feel the same. Maybe we need a ‘rediscovering our purpose post-burnout’ support group. Might be an idea…
Great - sounds good. Opportunity to share ideas, what directions people are going in, how to sit with being in between things and this being ok! Not all/any? careers are linear - it’s a myth! I’m on the cusp of taking voluntary redundancy so all at the forefront of my mind!
Wow. So much to take in here Amity! First of all I agree with all Brenda says, and as you know o think I’m your biggest fan when it comes to writing (I am enthralled) and your courage and common sense. I think you are well on your way to a bright exciting future - just keep focused and keep writing.
I spit out my drink (quite literally) when I read the line about LinkedIn. Full on guffaw. You nailed it. Also, well done Brenda. Those are all home truths that needed to be said, by a robot or a human or voices in your head. I’m glad you heard them.
Hi Amity, I could have written a very similar post but not as well! You're a wonderful writer. I think you could have a successful Substack, as in, make a living from it, if you wanted. And/or write more books. Ask Brenda for a realistic business plan. And keep going.
Thank you Nicky. That would be the absolute dream! I’m definitely going to keep going with it. And not self-editing relentlessly has helped too, not letting perfection become the enemy of good. I used to spend an entire day (or more) writing a single post which is not efficient or realistic. I’m going to try writing more regularly and honestly, and stop aiming for something ‘amazing’ every time.

Pedro, I love it. Especially if named after Pedro Pascale. Thank you for your kind and supportive words 😊

Charlie! There is room in this fucked up career canoe for two, let’s chat, definitely. Sending love and solidarity 💪

I love the point you made about AI being a repository of our collective wisdom. I’d never thought of it like that. Thank you.

I love this idea - post burnout rediscovery group - I think there’s something in it - shall we have a chat about this?
It’s something I’ve been thinking about actually. I might post about it soon, see if there would be any interest in a monthly meet up online to chat.

I still wish we lived closer to each other 🥰
Thank you Sheena. I am indeed going to keep on writing!

I’m glad someone liked the LinkedIn line, I was proud of that. Bit miffed no one has commented on my tiny violin though 😂
